Chargers Capitalize on Seven Saginaw United Turnovers in 28-12 Victory Powers Catholic improves to 2-2 with fourth-quarter surge; Beauchamp accounts for three touchdowns FLINT, Mich. — The Powers Catholic varsity football team took advantage of every opportunity Friday night, turning seven Saginaw United turnovers into points on the way to a 28-12 victory over the Phoenix at Atwood Stadium. The win moves the Chargers to 2-2 on the season, while Saginaw United falls to 0-4. Powers led 14-6 at halftime and carried a 14-12 advantage into the fourth quarter before the Chargers pulled away with a pair of touchdowns in the final period. The Chargers' defense was the difference throughout the night, forcing seven turnovers, including five interceptions, while Powers committed none. Beauchamp Leads the Chargers Junior Jayce Beauchamp turned in another outstanding performance, rushing for 182 yards on 18 carries and scoring two touchdowns on the ground. He also added a 4-yard touchdown reception to finish with three touchdowns and 214 yards of total offense. Beauchamp opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 63-yard touchdown run, giving Powers a 6-0 lead. In the second quarter, quarterback Thomas Begola connected on a 4-yard touchdown pass to give the Chargers a 12-0 advantage. Powers converted the two-point attempt to make it 14-0. Saginaw United answered with a 5-yard touchdown run before halftime and added a 4-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to cut the Powers lead to 14-12. Defense Takes Over With the game still within reach entering the fourth quarter, the Chargers' defense came through with two critical plays. Xavier Stephens intercepted a Saginaw United pass and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown, extending the Powers lead to 21-12. The Chargers then put the game away when Beauchamp broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 28-12. Powers finished the night with interceptions from Beauchamp, Hudson Miller, Makai Allen, Tommy Bossi and Stephens. Miller and Aidan Corcoran led the Chargers with 11 tackles apiece, while Bossi added five tackles and an interception. Offensively, Powers rushed for 243 yards, with Miller adding 53 yards on nine carries and Allen contributing 24 yards on six carries. The Chargers return to action Friday, Sept. 25, when they travel to take on Alpena.
