ALPENA, Mich. — Jayce Beauchamp and the Powers Catholic Chargers saved their best football for the second half Friday night. Beauchamp scored three touchdowns, including two long fourth-quarter runs, as Powers Catholic rallied from a 12-point deficit to defeat Alpena 21-18 in front of a capacity Homecoming crowd at Alpena High School. The Chargers, who entered the game 2-2, trailed 12-0 at halftime before taking control in the second half. Alpena, which entered at 1-3, was held scoreless in the third quarter and watched a two-touchdown lead disappear. Beauchamp accounted for 142 yards of offense and all three Powers touchdowns. He finished with 136 yards on 16 carries, averaging 8.5 yards per attempt, and added three receptions for 6 yards. His touchdown reception from quarterback Thomas Begola covered 6 yards and put the Chargers on the board in the third quarter. Powers trailed 12-0 at halftime after Alpena scored on touchdown runs of 41 and 10 yards in the first half. Both Alpena extra-point attempts were unsuccessful. The Chargers finally broke through in the third quarter when Begola connected with Beauchamp on the 6-yard scoring pass. Xavier Stephens added the extra point to cut the deficit to 12-7. Beauchamp then took over in the fourth quarter. He broke loose for a 71-yard touchdown run to give Powers its first lead of the night, 14-12. Later in the quarter, Beauchamp added a 30-yard touchdown run to extend the Chargers' advantage to 21-12. Alpena answered with a 1-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, but the extra point was missed, leaving the Chargers with an 18-21 deficit and ultimately preserving the Powers victory. Powers finished with 227 total yards, including 181 on the ground. The Chargers averaged 6.7 yards per rushing attempt and converted 4 of 9 third-down opportunities. Hudson Miller added 44 yards on eight carries, while Begola completed 6 of 10 passes for 46 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Drey Walton caught two passes for 31 yards. The Chargers also turned in a strong defensive effort when it mattered most. Aidan Corcoran and Asa Stenberg led Powers with 10 tackles apiece, while Miller added nine. Stephens recorded six tackles and intercepted an Alpena pass for 16 yards. Alpena finished with 328 total yards, including 218 rushing, but was limited to 1-for-11 on third-down conversions. The Wildcats also committed two turnovers to one for Powers. The victory moves Powers Catholic to 3-2 on the season. The Chargers return to action Friday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Dearborn Heights Annapolis for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
